Please note that by downloading patterns from this site, whether free or for sale, you are agreeing to abide by UK Copyright Law regardless of which territory you are buying from. This means that you may not copy, share, distribute, publish (including on-line on blogs or websites) or forward any part of the pattern or design without permission.
Pattern prices shown are calculated on the basis of most users making as many items for personal use at the lowest price we could offer a pattern for sale. This means we did not put any loading on the initial price to cover large scale commercial use and so we respectfully ask that you let us know of your intentions when making items for sale and ask us for written approval which will provide you with peace of mind. Anybody wishing for written permission for commercial use can email Erssie Knits directly:
erssiemajor@yahoo.co.uk
Erssie Knits assesses each request and usually issues a licence for you to be able to reproduce items for sale. In general, up to 10 items is usually approved after which permission to produce over 10 items can renewed and the letter of approval for this may be offered free of charge depnding on numbers. Most small shops only want to make less than 10 of each design. The right to refuse, exists. We have been successful in removing items from Etsy and Ebay where commercial use has occurred without permission and requests to the user to remove the item have been ignored.
Checks are in place not to stop this, but to ensure all those producing small numbers have the necessary written permission and peace of mind whilst ensuring that large producers e.g. factory outlets do not take advantage of free patterns by copying or producing garments in large numbers to be sold Worldwide. Obviously we would object if these were being made by children or people being paid an unacceptably low wage or forced to make items in poor working conditions. And also we would not want to be associated with a company if it was in any way contributing to environmental damage..
Therefore if you ask for permission to sell finished items, the short answer is most likely going to be 'yes' and we will ensure you get provided with written confirmation of our approval to support your request IF you have asked for permission up front. This changes, if you have been already been using the design without permission and not contacted us. In addition we love to hear from those making items to sell from our patterns and often, if we are unable to provide finished items we can pass on your links to those of our customers looking to purchase readymade itemsm so do keep in touch.

Please note that our policy regarding charted items differs, and you will require permission from the copyright owner to use any of the charted artworks within your own projects but in addition we most definitely will be reserving the rights to refuse uses for commercial projects as the rights of the original artist or our obligations to certain publishers must be upheld. You may apply for a permission, as for patterns, but there is much less chance of getting clearance if your pattern or project is in direct competition with any of the current uses.
