Beginner’s Simple Ribbed Scarf

Beginner’s Simple Ribbed Scarf

This is a perfect project for the complete beginner. Knitting a fine yarn like this alpaca 2ply on large needles gives a lacy, light and airy texture to standard rib which is normally dense. We used yarn from The Alpaca Spinner in the UK. The alpaca comes in natural shades and includes a little card with the name and photo of the alpaca who donated the yarn, as well as a certificate of authenticity. To make this scarf you need only know how to cast on, how to work a knit stitch and a purl stitch, and how to cast off. Small crochet flowers can be made as adornments, or you could search online for a pattern for simple knitted flowers or leaves.

Shown here (knitted to the gauge below), this scarf measures: 21.5cm x 122cm (or 8.5 inches x 48 inches)

Shown here is 18 sts x 24 rows over 10cm (4 inches) using 4.5mm needles.
Your gauge does not need to be exact, but try to use a needle about 5 sizes or 2.5mm larger than the one recommended on the yarn label to give the same effect as the scarf shown.

Shown here in The Alpaca Spinner Hand spun 2ply (knits as 4ply/fingering) 100% alpaca, 100 yds (91.44m) per 50g hank.
2 x 50g hanks from the alpaca Katya who is a natural light beige colour.
Substitute with any yarn that knits as 4ply or fingering.
Needles: 1 Pair of 4.5mm (US 7) needles Hook: 1 crochet hook size 2.75mm (US C-2)

This pattern is suitable for a beginner. It uses simple knit and purl stitches to make a classic rib, and a few optional crochet stitches.
